About Joe's Deli

Joe’s Deli located at 1322 Hertel Avenue opened its doors in August of 2006 after much anticipation.  This storefront is located at the corner of Hertel Avenue and Colvin Boulevard and has been a well-known Buffalo favorite for many years.   This former spot was, for many decades, occupied by Mastman’s delicatessan.   Since the turnover, the setting has been completely renovated, updated and redecorated while still maintaining many deli delights with which Buffalo is familiar. 

Owner and operator Joseph Lyons was born and raised in Buffalo, New York.  Lyons began his culinary work in San Diego and soon thereafter attended the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York.  Since then he has worked in Manhattan and Atlanta, where he was involved in the opening of new restaurant venues.  However, Lyons’ heart was always in Buffalo.   Lyons returned to his home- town and cooked in the kitchen of the historic Park Lane Restaurant.  Here his managing and catering skills  evolved.  This experience was transferred to the companion Statler Towers facility where Lyons was Banquet Manager, overseeing the renovation and re- opening of the Terrace room to much acclaim. 

When the opportunity arose to go on his own, Lyons chose the Hertel & Colvin location.  He was excited about being a part of the happening life on The Hertel Strip, as well as a location were tradition is valued.

The menu of Joe’s Deli has both the traditional deli favorites, as well as unique, eclectic choices for the more adventurous appetite.  Moist, Succulent corned beef and juicy slow cooked Roast Beef are two of many items prepared in the kitchen daily.  There are also two sandwiches that feature marinated, sliced pork loin, and one with BBQ pulled pork.  

There is also a variety of home- made soups to choose from. Some of our featured Fall- season soups include Pumpkin Cider Bisque, Carrot Ginger Puree, Potato Leek and a crowd favorite the Reuben Soup.  Also on the menu there is an assortment of wraps and a “create your own” salad section with a wide array of meat, cheeses and topping choices and home- made dressings.
